IPS Empress® II

Somer Dental recommends this strong and esthetic restoration product for both crowns and bridges.  This is a perfect product for esthetic sensitive cases.  The esthetics are quite beautiful and the overall strength of the material is impressive.  Three-unit bridges with one pontic can be done with the second premolar as the most distal abutment.  Please note that Somer does not recommend conventional cementation of this product.

The second generation of the revolutionary system in esthetic dentistry, IPS Empress2, now offers the possibility to fabricate all-ceramic bridges.  The new lithium disilicate framework ceramic and the fluorapatite layering ceramic permit the fabrication of all-ceramic bridges that demonstrate properties similar to those of natural teeth.

Chromascop is the shade guide of choice by Somer Dental Laboratory.  IPS Empress2 harmoniously fits into the IVOCLAR-VIVADENT range of products in coordinated shades.

Preparations:

The preparation significantly influences the stability and thus the durability, esthetics, and accuracy of fit of the restoration.  Therefore, carefully design the margins with a  pronounced chamfer or shoulder (rounded inner edges).  Avoid sharp transitions, inner angles, or feather edges.

Crown and bridge restorations
Minimum preparation requirements
Deep chamfer or shoulder: 1 mm
Coronal third of the crown: 1.5.mm
Occlusal and/or incisal: 2 mm

Inlays
Minimum preparation requirements
Fissure depth at isthumas: 1.5 mm
Width of the isthmus: 1.5 mm
Proximal boxes should be slightly flared; angle > 90°, no enamel edge
Functional contacts need to be observed

Crowns
Minimum preparations requirements
Deep chamfer or shoulder: 1 mm
Coronal third of the crown: 1.5 mm
Occlusal and/or incisal: 2 mm

Onlays
Same procedures as for inlays
2 mm of occlusal clearance is required for the cusp areas

Veneers
In the preparations of veneers, remember:
Veneer thickness approx. 0.6 mm
Provide a chamfer at the gingival margin
In stress bearing areas reduce tooth surface to provide bulk of ceramic for function.

Optimum method of cementation:
--Adhesive Cementation
Basically, adhesive cementation (Variolink® II) should be the objective.  If there are clinical reasons that speak against adhesive cementation, crowns and bridges with crown abutments which were fabricated with the IPS Empress2 layering material may also be cemented with ProTec CEM®(VIVADENT.)

Hybrid ionomer cements with higher degrees of expansion than ProTec CEM® must not be used.

Restorations fabricated with the IPS staining materials or the old IPS Empress layering materials must be seated using the adhesive technique.

If the adhesive method is impossible use Conventional Cementation
Please note:
Somer does not recommend conventional cementation
Conventional cementation should be carried out only…

   1) In areas where adhesive cementation can not be achieved

   2) If adequate retention is achieved, and

   3) If the restoration was fabricated with the IPS Empress2 layering material.
