Vita’s Vitapan 3D-Master Shade Guide

Somer Dental’s favored shade system

The Vitapan 3D-Master Shade Guide has been awarded the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association. The innovative shade guide was introduced in February 1998 and is currently in use by more than 40,000 dental professionals.

The Vitapan 3D-Master Shade Guide addresses the critical elements of tooth shade measurement, which have previously been unexplored by other shade systems, such as a systematic arrangement of shades within the natural tooth color space and an objective, numerical measure of color.

When taking a patient’s shade, you, the dentist, have only three simple steps to follow: First, determine the Value (lightness) by selecting the closest match from one of five value groups, called an “M group”.  Second, determine the Chroma within the M group from three choices.  Third, pick the Hue by determining if the tooth has a more yellow or red cast.  A simple color communication prescription form filled out by the dentist allows us to exactly reproduce the selected shade.

The science of color reproduction is one of the most intricate known to man, and Vita spent two years developing and refining their system of measure.  Each of the 26 shades is spaced to allow the easy reproduction of intermediate shades by picking the exact middle between the two shades.  This concept completely removes the guesswork that we often encounter when creating intermediate shades.

VITA has also created a bleached tab, labeled the “0” (zero) group, to allow dentists to create bleached restoration shades.  The bleached tab follows the same scientific principle as the 3D guide, permitting very precise restorations for those “whiter-than-white” smiles

A separate color guide is also available, which eliminates the necks and enamels for those individuals that want to determine the body color individually.  As in the tooth guide, there are 26 possible shades covering the complete range of natural tooth colors.

An interactive CD ROM and video, featuring Dr. Gordon Christensen’s independently produced program on the 3D-Master Guide, are available to help educate the user on the concept of the Vitapan 3D-Master Guide. An interactive tour is also available at Vident’s web site at www.vident.com.
